  • The Middlebury community held its annual Resolution Run 5k on New Year's Day and more than 240 runners raised funds to support the local food pantry for at least three months while inspiring first-timers to join the cause.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New SNAP guidelines in Indiana took effect Thursday, Jan. 1, banning sugary drinks and candy from benefits. Retailers are updating over 70,000 UPC codes, and lists of acceptable items (such as potato chips, ice cream, and fruit juice) are posted to curb confusion.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Beacon Health System welcomed its first baby of 2026, Baby Chozen, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend at 7:35 a.m. on January 1. He weighed eight pounds four ounces as Megan Dawe and Stephen Malone finished 12 hours of labor.  WSBT
  • Beacon Health System welcomed its first baby of 2026 at Memorial Hospital on New Year's Day at 7:35 a.m. Parents Megan Dawe and Stephen Malone delivered baby boy Chozen after a 12-hour labor (he weighed eight pounds, four ounces and measured 21(3/4) inches tall).  ABC 57

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Indiana State Parks hosted its First Day Hike at Potato Creek State Park yesterday as 229 hikers walked a one-mile trail from the Nature Center, spotting eagles and enjoying s'mores with hot drinks. The event promoted healthy outdoor activity in the local community.  WSBT
  • Maverick and Jester, two friendly four-year-old cats, are seeking a loving home in South Bend today. They are neutered, vaccinated, and ready to share their cozy comfort, so call Pet Refuge (574-231-1122) to meet them.  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Michiana Bicycle Association hosted its 17th annual Polar Bear ride in Granger on Thursday afternoon with about a dozen cyclists riding up to 32 miles. Participants joined a social event afterwards to meet fellow riders.  WSBT
  • No. 18 Notre Dame women’s basketball lost 95-90 in overtime to Georgia Tech on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1), snapping its five-game win streak. The team struggled with injuries and limited depth on the road.  South Bend Tribune
