CULTURE NEWS

  • The city is opening the 20,000 sqft Raclin Murphy Encore Center with events from Jan. 10 to Jan. 24 featuring a basketweaving workshop (led by the Pokagon Band) and a concert by October London and Micki Miller; a Feb. 6 ribbon cutting and open house follow.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area will host a free virtual Lunch with the League event on Jan. 9 at noon, featuring Saint Mary’s College provost Megan Halteman Zwart as she explains how to build dialogue skills for working with different viewpoints (the event is open to the public).  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Voting in the South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week poll is open with 19 nominees from 15 area schools — voters can cast one vote each hour until Jan. 8 at 11:59 p.m.  South Bend Tribune
  • Indiana football secured defensive end Joshua Burnham's commitment on Sunday night; he posted 'one last ride' on Instagram from South Bend, joining as the program’s seventh transfer. Burnham, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound player from Traverse City (with one year of eligibility), played 40 games at Notre Dame.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame women's basketball lost to Duke 82-68 on Jan. 4, showing limited depth due to fatigue and injuries (including key absences). The team, now 10-4, will face Boston College on Jan. 8 in a bid to rebound.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend Tribune and NDInsider columnist Tom Noie will host his monthly Notre Dame basketball chat on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 8:30 a.m. local viewers may submit questions in advance.  South Bend Tribune
  • Riley Leonard, former Notre Dame quarterback, started for the Colts on Sunday, Jan. 4 in a 38-30 loss to the Texans. He threw 270 yards and two touchdowns (nearly ending Notre Dame quarterbacks' long NFL losing streak) in his first NFL start.  South Bend Tribune
