GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of South Bend began offering free Christmas tree recycling yesterday and will continue the program through January, with trees picked up on trash day and only the first tree free while additional trees cost $10 once ornaments and lights are removed.  WSBT

  • American Red Cross officials warn that a critical blood shortage is developing after a busy holiday season led to fewer donations. South Bend donors are urged to help by taking part in upcoming drive events (local centers will share the schedule).  WSBT

  • Indiana University’s winning football team, compared to the legendary Milan High School squad that inspired the movie Hoosiers, is set to face Oregon in the Peach Bowl on Friday, Jan. 9—sparking strong local pride.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame women's basketball is unranked in the AP Top 25 after losses to Georgia Tech and Duke, leaving them 10-4 and set to face Boston College on Thursday, Jan. 8 — a first unranked status since Week 3 of the 2021-22 season.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame football starter Josh Burnham is transferring to Indiana for his final season and becomes the second starter to join the Hoosiers after center Pat Coogan — in a busy transfer window that also sees Kenny Minchey heading to Nebraska.  South Bend Tribune
  • Plymouth High School will hire Ron Shaffer as its new head football coach pending board approval today—Shaffer led Rochester for five seasons and will replace former coach Adam Handley.  South Bend Tribune
  • Retired sportscaster Gary Danielson said Oregon will be more focused for the Peach Bowl rematch with undefeated Indiana on Friday after the Ducks were distracted by the celebration following their double-overtime win over Penn State.  South Bend Tribune
