COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Northern Indiana will host drive-thru food distributions across six counties in February — including a South Bend event at a former Kroger parking lot on Feb. 26 — to serve 150 to 300 households per site with pre-packaged food offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  WSBT
  • On Friday, Jan. 23, dozens braved cold and snow to participate in the annual March for Life downtown. They marched and gathered indoors where organizers said the event showed solidarity for unborn children.  WSBT
  • Rhett, a Basset Hound from Homeward Bound (a local rescue) in Mishawaka, has a chance to win the Lombarky trophy in Discovery's Pupularity Playoffs today. Local residents can vote online (voting is open now) to back the pup in the contest.  WSBT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • All westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road at mile marker 76 were blocked by a multi-vehicle crash near South Bend on Friday, and crews are working to open the left passing lane.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison Hostetler of NorthWood High was named South Bend Tribune Student of the Week for Jan. 19 after readers’ votes selected her from nominees at LaVille Jr/Sr, Mishawaka and Northridge High, highlighting her strong academics, dance skills and volunteer work.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former South Bend Mayor and US Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke at Notre Dame on Friday — he discussed public policy, redistricting, and artificial intelligence while urging young people to harness their power for change.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors and emergency management officials advise residents to stay indoors when temperatures drop below 15 degrees; if travel is needed, stock your car with non-perishable food, blankets, a flashlight, a shovel and kitty litter (for traction) and share your route with a family member. They also urge keeping pets inside.  WSBT
  • In Mishawaka on Friday, Indiana Treatment Centers held the grand opening of a new substance abuse treatment center that offers personalized care for recovery — officials said a third center will open in Muncie this summer to expand access to services.  WSBT
