COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Restaurant Weeks returns downtown, giving locals a chance to enjoy diverse cuisines while 10%+ of proceeds support Beacon Children's Hospital. The event runs until Feb. 8.  WSBT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Douglas Road is closed between Capital and Bittersweet due to hazardous road conditions; police report that five vehicles got stuck and advise drivers to avoid the area.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Bend Schools are starting a blind review of discipline cases to check if race affects penalty assignment after November data showed black students face 1.7 times the disciplinary measures. The process, which will include community input, is set to take six to nine months.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend officials invite residents to join a community engagement event on Thursday to provide input on the Rum Village Park Master Plan at the Technology Resource Center (1165 Franklin St.) from 4:30 to 7 p.m.  ABC 57
  • Indiana lawmakers advanced House Bill 1086 on Tuesday, letting teachers display the Ten Commandments in classrooms without reading it aloud; the relaxed mandate now awaits a full vote on the House floor.  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame guard Markus Burton, from Mishawaka, has not yet decided whether to return after surgery for a broken ankle sustained in December, with coach Micah Shrewsberry noting his recovery progress. He may come back later this season or sit out to preserve an extra year of eligibility.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team lost to Clemson 65-58 in South Bend today; coaches Hannah Hidalgo and Niele Ivey spoke after the game.  South Bend Tribune
  • Tuesday, Jan. 27, Notre Dame basketball lost 100-97 in double overtime to No. 17 Virginia in South Bend. Coach Micah Shrewsberry's team saw a dramatic finish with multiple lead changes, falling short of their first ranked win.  South Bend Tribune
  • Mike Mickens, a defensive coach at Notre Dame for six seasons, left the team last fall & joined the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens to test his play-calling skills. His move opens a new chapter for the local football program and his own career.  South Bend Tribune
  • Freshman Mark Zackery IV left the basketball team after six weeks so he can focus on football + conditioning as Notre Dame begins spring practice. Coach Shrewsberry said the move aims to prepare him for a key role in the upcoming season.  South Bend Tribune
  • Former Notre Dame defensive back DeVonta Smith tallied eight tackles and received two penalties in the East-West Shrine Bowl loss in Frisco on Tuesday, Jan. 27 — his team fell 21-17.  South Bend Tribune
  • Mishawaka Marian has hired local alumnus Joe Calderone as its new head football coach, and he plans to rebuild the team with a family-first culture. Nearly 90% of last season's staff remain as he seeks to build trust and guide the Knights toward championships.  South Bend Tribune
