  • The Potawatomi Zoo is reopening its Winter Weekends today and Sunday (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) after a closure last week due to extreme cold weather.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1964, local residents boycotted Kreamo Bakery for not hiring Black workers + the boycott led the company to hire two Black employees. IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage is sharing this story along with three others in a new online local history encyclopedia coming in 2027.  South Bend Tribune
  • Indiana Landmarks awarded over $3 million in 2025 to local nonprofits and cities to help preserve historic sites around Michiana. Grants cover architectural assessments, repairs and programming at places such as Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church and St. Thomas More Academy in South Bend.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tribune Talk will host a panel discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. to review Senate Bill 248 and its impact on South Bend Community School Corp.  South Bend Tribune
  • Myangel Jackson of Mishawaka High School was named Tribune's Student of the Week for Jan. 26 by reader votes, while nominees from NorthWood and Northridge were also recognized (check back Monday for next week’s nominations).  South Bend Tribune

  • Prescott Horvath, an offensive lineman at Marian, has committed to Indiana as a preferred walk-on after earning back-to-back IFCA All-State honors. He accepted on Thursday after receiving offers from eight programs and impressing Indiana coaches (despite a past hip injury).  South Bend Tribune
