CULTURE NEWS

  • Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey and senior KK Bransford spoke about celebrating Black excellence and serving as role models during Black History Month.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The South Bend school board said at a meeting on Feb. 9 that the state audit report covering up to June 2023 did not include an investigation into alleged grade changes — officials noted that new systems are in place to prevent misconduct. The audit report will be published soon.  South Bend Tribune
  • Operation Education is investigating the way local high school graduation rates are calculated. Data released in January shows Indiana seniors graduated at a rate of 91.83% statewide and 95% at Mishawaka High—leading school leaders to caution that not all diploma recipients may be counted.  WSBT
  • An anonymous $2.25 million donation is set to transform two spaces at Holy Cross College; $750,000 will fund a new Residence Hall Chapel opening in August and $1.5 million will support a future Center for Campus Ministry in the upcoming Student Union.  WSBT

  • Activist Jeanne White-Ginder urged Indiana lawmakers on Feb. 10 to update HIV criminal laws that punish low-risk actions and continue to fuel stigma. She encouraged Hoosiers to contact officials ahead of Feb. 28 HIV Is Not a Crime Awareness Day (aiming to replace fear with facts).  South Bend Tribune
  • St. Joseph County remains uncertain about the future of the rural ambulance service as the current contract with South Bend for advanced life support may not be renewed. Township leaders say local officials need time until 2028 to secure funding and staffing if communities must run services independently.  WSBT

  • In March, former Mishawaka mayor Jeff Rea survived a widow-maker heart attack after doctors at Beacon Medical Group reopened his blocked LAD artery, and he later began cardiac rehab at Memorial Hospital.  WSBT

  • Saint Joseph boys basketball beat Penn 67 to 58 on Tuesday night at Alumni Gym. Braylen White scored 16 and Elijah King scored 17, securing an 8+ win streak and moving them to the top of the NIC standings.  South Bend Tribune
  • Saint Joseph's Arianna Rowell averaged 27.3 points and was named NIC girls basketball MVP while Penn coach Kristi Ulrich earned NIC Coach of the Year after leading her team to a perfect conference record — top honors for the 2025-26 season.  South Bend Tribune
