  • Al Carothers, owner of Al's House of Style, says his barbershop gives locals more than haircuts + a welcoming space for community connection.  South Bend Tribune

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to an early morning barn fire on Thursday, Feb. 12 at a local farm; they contained the blaze (preventing it from spreading to a nearby home) but several farm animals did not survive.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center launched a series for Black History Month featuring four weekly stories that include a 1964 Kreamo bakery boycott, musician Billy 'Stix' Nicks’ journey, and community leader B.G. Smith & these previews come ahead of an online encyclopedia set for a 2027 launch.  South Bend Tribune
  • The Studebaker Museum in South Bend displays the world's largest collection of presidential carriages, custom-built for historic American figures such as President Lincoln and President Harrison. The collection is on view Monday through Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m. to 5 p.m.).  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in St. Joseph County, including those in Granger (where leaves have piled up) have experienced months-long delays in pickup service. County Councilman Dan Schaetzle said leaders will meet with the contracted company today to review the issues and plan future pickups.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Beacon Children's Hospital NICU staff celebrated Valentine's Day by decorating the unit and giving each baby a crocheted hat (including three sets of twins) while taking photos for parents.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • John Glenn High School football head coach Ron Brown resigned after two seasons with a 3-16 record; his resignation is set for school board review on Tuesday, Feb. 17 (he will remain an assistant principal).  South Bend Tribune
  • Penn senior Alayna Riggins earned NIC MVP honors by leading her team to a championship during the 2025-26 season while New Prairie coach Ashley Wojtysiak was named Coach of the Year. The awards were based on strong performances at the NIC meet.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame basketball hosts Georgia Tech at Purcell Pavilion on Saturday at 12 p.m. Both teams, with a 2-10 ACC record, will try to win to break a losing streak and improve their chances for the tournament.  South Bend Tribune
