COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Indiana University South Bend hosted its annual Party with a Purpose event March 5 where participants created reusable pads for girls in Malawi and collected disposable products for local organizations. The day-long event featured stations with fabrics and sewing machines and included educational presentations on menstrual equity.  South Bend Tribune
  • Former football coach Lou Holtz died Wednesday at 89, prompting Notre Dame President Emeritus Father Edward (Monk) Malloy to share memories of the coach’s role in the team’s championship success and his lasting legacy as a faithful Notre Dame man. Campus members also remembered him at his on-campus memorial statue.  WSBT
  • South Bend hosts a Disney-themed First Fridays today from 5 to 9 p.m. with character meet and greets, live music and dining specials while Goshen supports local charity with 10% of purchases benefiting community groups.  WSBT

FINANCE NEWS

  • The BBB warned consumers last night about rising tax impostor scams that use fake business names + urgent calls to pressure taxpayers ahead of tax season. Consumers are advised to only respond to official IRS mail and verify contacts with trusted sources.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana will let restaurants and bars serve alcohol until 4 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 8, to make up for the lost hour when clocks spring forward (from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.). The extension does not affect liquor, grocery, or convenience stores.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend parents Cindy and Brad Lang worry as their son, daughter-in-law and grandson now shelter in place in Dubai amid war. They said the Costa Rican embassy provided an evacuation plan while the US embassy only recently offered a call option, leaving them seeking answers.  WSBT
  • Margie Pfeil (board president of Our Lady of the Road and the New Day Intake Center) will speak on the center's supportive services at the League of Women Voters' Lunch with the League on Zoom at noon March 13.  South Bend Tribune
  • NIPSCO announced new temporary measures to ease rising utility bills by waiving late fees, pausing service disconnections, and reducing reconnect deposits for gas customers until the end of March. The utility will also improve communication at upcoming community care centers.  WSBT

  • Four-year-old Hemi is a friendly 70-pound dog with great manners and a love for rope toys who is available for adoption at South Bend Animal Resource Center. Interested families may call for an appointment to meet this loyal companion today.  South Bend Tribune

  • Today, Notre Dame women’s basketball will play NC State at 1:30 p.m. ET on the ACC Network at Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia. The winning team will advance to a semifinal game on Saturday at Noon ET.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame basketball will play Boston College tomorrow at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill as the Irish hope a win will secure their ACC tournament chances. The game starts at 12 p.m. and tickets remain available.  South Bend Tribune
