ECONOMY NEWS

  • Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Indiana increased to 2,525 from 2,469 last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor — a modest rise for the period ending Feb. 28.  South Bend Tribune

  • Daylight saving time will begin tomorrow when clocks move forward at 2 a.m. and local bars and restaurants will extend alcohol service until 4 a.m. (to accommodate the change).  South Bend Tribune

  • Notre Dame must beat Boston College today to secure an ACC tournament berth if Syracuse wins against Pittsburgh — the Irish, fresh off a loss to Stanford, are striving to keep their season alive.  ABC 57
  • Riley and Saint Joseph will play for the IHSAA Class 4A boys basketball sectional title Saturday night in South Bend. Key role players are expected to boost each team as they vie for the sectional crown.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame women's basketball faces Duke in the ACC semifinal today (noon ET) at Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia. Fans can watch the game on ESPN2 while the winner moves on to the championship contest tomorrow.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua warned at the White House forum on Friday, Mar. 6 that college sports are a runaway train if transparency and regulations are not increased; he said oversight is needed to protect academics and athletes+ his remarks followed a tribute to former coach Lou Holtz.  South Bend Tribune
