  • South Bend shows Irish pride as the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Niles Avenue is temporarily renamed — Saint Patrick's Day Boulevard — even though the parade may be postponed. The city will mark its 25th celebration with the East Race greening next Saturday, March 22 at 11 a.m.  ABC 57

CRIME NEWS

  • South Bend Police Department tapes case will go to trial in June after a judge said the council cannot decide without a trial+ she allowed some evidence to be struck amid disputes over 2011 phone calls with alleged racist remarks+ a pretrial hearing is set for May 16.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Bend celebrates St. Patrick’s Day weekend as Fiddler’s Hearth hosts traditional Irish food, dancing, and music all weekend leading into Monday—while the Downtown Pub Crawl attracts crowds decked in green and plans to serve 630 pounds of corned beef on Main Street.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chef LaQuisha Jackson opened a new culinary school in South Bend today to teach cooking skills to students from underserved communities. One of her students said the program offers hands-on classes and career training—expecting more opportunities soon.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights for practices that may favor some races over others—one of 45 schools under review. The university said it follows the law and works to treat every student fairly.  South Bend Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Amazon Web Services—known as AWS—has applied to fill nearly 10 wetland acres to expand its New Carlisle data center. Local residents plan to meet with county leaders this week while the Indiana Department of Environmental Management accepts public comments until March 20.  ABC 57
