CRIME NEWS

  • The St. Joseph County Police Department increased warnings and citations on U.S. 20 and Indiana 2 near the Amazon data center to address safety concerns from speeding and crashes, issuing 68 warnings, 20 citations, 235 traffic stops and two arrests from March 10th to 15th while saying enforcement will continue as needed.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend police tapes case is headed to trial after Superior Court Judge Jamie Woods denied the common council’s motion to strike evidence—saying the tapes allegedly show police misconduct and racist remarks are needed—and a pre-trial conference is set for May 16 with bench trials planned for June 18 and 20 at the Mishawaka courthouse.  South Bend Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Studebaker National Museum is hosting 'Landaus, Tourers and Broughams, Oh My!' today at 1:30 p.m. as part of its Speaker Series, and archivist Andrew Beckman will discuss Studebaker coachbuilding history—highlighting design and technological shifts from the horse-drawn era through key models like the 1932-33 St. Regis Brougham, the 1947-52 Starlight Coupe and the 1952-54 Starliner Hardtop.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Bend Community School Corp. ended its contract with SSC Services for Education by a unanimous board vote on March 17 and will insource custodial, maintenance and landscaping work. The district will send a termination letter on March 31 and begin a waiting period of 90 days until the contract ends on July 1, a move expected to save about $4 million each year.  South Bend Tribune
  • Tonya Aerts, a biomedical science teacher at New Prairie, was honored with the 2025 Hero for Young Hearts Adult Advocacy Champion award for her work helping 45 Indiana schools become Heart Safe after a student died in 2017—her efforts now improve emergency response protocols with better AED placement and staff training to save lives.  South Bend Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana DNR has launched a new website that shows weekly counts of steelhead, coho salmon, chinook salmon and brown trout moving through the fish ladder at Seitz Park in South Bend. Last week, biologists recorded 537 fish using a motion-activated camera — each fish’s photo is reviewed to track species counts.  South Bend Tribune

  • Indiana Department of Transportation will host an open house on April 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph County Public Library Community Learning Center in South Bend to present the draft 2026-2030 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program—public can submit comments online or by mail from April 1 to May 15.  ABC 57
