  • County Surveyor Derek Dieter is leading a volunteer cleanup of litter along Portage Avenue near Portage Manor starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29—volunteers will receive gloves, equipment, T-shirts from DLZ Indiana, and Chick-fil-A sandwiches while Dieter offers tours of the manor trails until 6 p.m.  South Bend Tribune
  • LOGAN held its annual Nose-On event on Wednesday at Century Center to mark 75 years of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. About 800 people attended the luncheon and green nose sales raised funds that will help continue its services — the money will support future programs.  WSBT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • South Side Soda Shop in Goshen closed until further notice after an overnight fire early Thursday morning—firefighters confined the blaze to one upstairs apartment and the restaurant remains standing for a future reopening.  WSBT
  • On March 26 at 7:15 p.m., a 19-year-old South Bend teen lost control near Jefferson Middle School on South Eddy Street, slid over a curb, and collided with a northbound vehicle, dying from his injuries as police said speed was a factor.  South Bend Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • 24-year-old former South Bend police officer Emanuel Garcia was arrested again for allegedly violating a protection order by entering the protected home, marking his second arrest in less than a month after a February charge for domestic battery, criminal confinement and resisting law enforcement — he has been on unpaid leave since his initial arrest.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend officials will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at the MLK Jr. Dream Center on Friday, April 4 at 11 a.m.—the event follows a 0.7-mile march from the Civil Rights Heritage Center at 10 a.m. that will feature live music and building tours, though final site improvements continue and programming is not yet open.  ABC 57
