COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community meals are planned from April 3 to April 12 at local spots, with events like burger night at Galien American Legion Post 344 on April 3, fish fries on April 4 and April 11 in South Bend, and a pancake breakfast on April 5. The Savor the Shoreline event will run from April 4 to May 4 in downtown St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, offering another affordable meal option.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tribune is asking readers to vote for Student of the Week with nominees from Mishawaka High and Penn High—voting opens today until noon on Thursday, April 3. A story with the winning details will appear Friday morning and in Monday's print edition.  South Bend Tribune
  • In 1965, Notre Dame announced that undergraduates would pay $1,500 per academic year starting next fall—ND President Rev. Hesburgh said rising educational costs required the increase. The plan also raised law school and graduate tuition by $200 to reach $1,200, effective next fall.  South Bend Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Strong storms tore through Michiana Sunday afternoon, leaving widespread damage, power outages, and fallen trees on houses and cars. A confirmed tornado near Sturgis (per the National Weather Service) and winds above 80 mph (with several reports of hail) added to the damage, though emergency management reported no injuries and temperatures will drop into the 30s today.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Prep girls tennis is heating up as Saint Joseph’s and Penn get ready for the state tournament series starting May 19. Saint Joseph’s—defending last year’s state champion—will rely on returning players like Anni Amalnathan and Libby Yergler while Penn, led by senior Aileen Hu, aims to build on its past strong run.  South Bend Tribune
  • The South Bend Tribune named its 2024-25 Girls Basketball All-Area Team today with South Bend Washington senior Kira Reynolds earning Player of the Year for her record-breaking performances — including setting the state’s all-time blocks record — while Brandywine coach Josh Hood was honored for guiding his team to a 27–1 season. Reynolds joined teammates from Washington, Penn and Northridge on the first team as area players helped mark an eventful season with strong tournament runs despite no state titles.  South Bend Tribune
  • Former Notre Dame tight end Mitchell Evans said current tight end Eli Raridon could have a freaky year as he takes on a bigger role this spring—coach Mike Denbrock highlighted Raridon’s size and skills with greater opportunity now that junior Cooper Flanagan is recovering.  South Bend Tribune
