EDUCATION NEWS

  • The South Bend High School Music Festival took place on March 31 at the Morris Performing Arts Center and featured 13 ensembles from Washington, John Adams and Riley high schools. The event showcased jazz bands, vocal groups and orchestras that highlighted local student talent.  South Bend Tribune
  • Hums Elementary has been closed for a third day after severe weather on Sunday caused a power outage—crews are working to restore power but have not set a reopening time.  WSBT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A series of outdoor events will start on April 3 with a free tree canopy tour at Saint Mary’s College offering workshops and guided tours—an event that highlights the campus’s long-standing tree program. Other activities include stargazing on April 4 at Bonneyville Mill County Park, a dunes hike on April 5, a bird walk on April 6, and a talk on native plants on April 7 by the South Bend chapter of Wild Ones—each designed to give residents hands-on nature experiences.  South Bend Tribune

  • On March 28, 2025, the Indiana Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in the State of Indiana v. Norman Thomas II case at Mishawaka High School during the Appeals on Wheels program—Judge Elizabeth Tavitas, a Mishawaka High School graduate, participated while defense attorney Bryan Johnson offered a rebuttal.  South Bend Tribune
  • Crews in South Bend have been repairing damage from Sunday’s storm by clearing fallen trees, fixing power lines and restoring electricity before another round of weather hits. Indiana Michigan Power’s team including external crews and a tree cutting service worked nearly nine hours at a site where a fallen tree damaged a home, and they urge residents to steer clear of downed wires — a key safety reminder.  ABC 57

HEALTH NEWS

  • Beacon Health System lifted visitor restrictions at all its Michiana hospitals (rules put in place in early February ended due to high flu levels) and said masks are now optional (to be worn if requested by patients or staff).  WSBT
