- ➤ Rebuilding Together St. Joseph County (now in its 36th year) helps elderly, disabled, and veteran homeowners get vital repairs they cannot afford and is working in Keller Park and Marquette Park this month. Volunteers will return for Community Work Day later this month (addressing roofs, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC) to keep homes safe for families. WSBT

- ➤ Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday night on the 3300 block of Portage Road near the Phillips 66 gas station in South Bend — one person was transported to hospital. WSBT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local groups in South Bend and Elkhart are planning many Earth Day and Arbor Day events for the public. The events include a reuse workshop at Unity Gardens on April 11th, a panel discussion at the St. Joseph County Public Library and a cleanup plus kids’ chalk art contest at Fernwood Botanical Garden in Niles on April 12th, a stewardship day at the Grand Beach Marsh Preserve on April 12th, a tree seedling open house at the Izaak Walton League on April 13th, and free tree giveaways by the Clay-Granger Lions Club on April 19th—each giving people a way to help the environment. - ➤ South Bend’s Community Police Review Office is asking residents to help shape a draft policy for investigating complaints about officer conduct—comments must be sent in by April 26. Pastor Charles King III introduced the draft during a March 27 meeting and police legal advisor Kylie Connell offered suggestions for changes. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ The South Bend Fire Merit Board held its first meeting on April 2 and elected its leadership including President Dan Jones while remaining with three members until Mayor James Mueller and the firefighters appoint two more; the board will meet on May 7 to vote on bylaws and set rules within 90 days—Local 362 will then provide formal training to its members. This board will oversee the hiring, promotions, and discipline of fire department personnel. South Bend Tribune

- ➤ Former Notre Dame basketball player Tae Davis announced his transfer to Oklahoma on March 23—he will join after completing the NBA pre-draft process if he receives a guarantee to bypass his final college season. The transfer portal remains open until April 22. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ Penn High School softball will host a teddy bear toss before its varsity game on April 16 at Beacon Children's Hospital — fans can donate teddy bears and blankets. Marian will hold a Cleats vs. Cancer tournament on May 17 at the Baranay Sports Complex — the event will feature a silent auction and bake sale to raise funds for cancer support. South Bend Tribune
