COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amy Hill, who has led Transpo since 2018, has been named the new CEO of the YWCA shelter for women facing domestic violence and will start on May 5—she is a lifelong local resident and former YWCA board member.  South Bend Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • South Bend police arrested 39-year-old Brandon Hughes on Monday after shots fired just before 10:30 p.m. near the Phillips 66 gas station on Portage Road injured a man with non-life-threatening injuries, and a car crash was also reported.  WSBT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Downtown South Bend will see record investment with more than $1 billion in new projects planned near Four Winds Field. The developments include affordable apartments, restaurants and coworking spaces — a boost that officials say will bring jobs and a fresh look to the area.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the South Bend Cubs start their season by using interactive QR codes on the scoreboard to let fans share selfies and join a saucy song battle at the ballpark. The team will also give away magnet schedules, bobbleheads and hockey jerseys and debut its new mascot Ivy—a tribute to local baseball history—as announced by Assistant General Manager Chris Hagstrom-Jones based on fan survey feedback.  ABC 57
  • Notre Dame junior quarterback Steve Angeli has worked hard—playing key roles at the Sun Bowl and Orange Bowl—to show he is ready for a starting position. He said he will keep competing until he earns the job when Notre Dame returns to South Florida on Labor Day Sunday night.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend Cubs catering manager Jordyn Fitzgerald leads the team behind the scenes as the main kitchen is closed for the Four Winds Field renovation—Summer Horan reveals an updated menu that features sangria fast balls, opponent burgers, specialty hot dogs, elote and tater tot buckets for opening night. Fans and large groups can order ahead through the ticket office or website.  ABC 57
