COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Bend 6th District Council member Sheila Niezgodski is hosting a neighborhood cleanup on Saturday, Apr. 11 at Rum Village Nature Center; volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. for coffee plus doughnuts and supplies, and residents can also join Tire Collection Day from 8 a.m. to noon.  South Bend Tribune

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Pierce Road near the LaPorte County line reopened Thursday afternoon after high water forced its closure earlier this week and caused a car crash on Tuesday near North Liberty.  WSBT

  • A new southern white rhino named Frankie arrived at Potawatomi Zoo last week and is now adjusting to new zookeepers and routines + visitors can look forward to seeing him soon.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colfax Avenue will close on April 13 for AEP utility work (from near the East Bank Trail to Hill Street) as part of a streetscape project designed to add bike and pedestrian paths, with further work planned in the coming months.  WSBT
  • Following a 15% plunge in oil prices and a new gas tax holiday declared by Governor Mike Braun, South Bend gas prices have dropped to about $4.12 per gallon. The 30-day tax break is effective today and may lead to lower prices as state officials monitor price fluctuations.  ABC 57
  • INDOT crews are resurfacing nearly 12 miles of State Road 23 between North Liberty and South Bend, forcing lane closures and one-lane traffic today. The work will continue until the end of November & a full closure for a small structure replacement is planned for late May.  WSBT
  • Spring property tax season has started for St. Joseph County residents as new governor tax laws take effect. Bills use last year's property values, and residents who appealed may receive a credit in November if their adjusted value is not applied (payments are due May 10).  WSBT
