CULTURE NEWS

  • The South Bend Anime Festival took place today at the Hilton Garden Inn where fans gathered to view collectibles and hear voice actors such as Jennifer Chihi as Sailor Moon and Peter Kelamis as Goku—this first event in the city is part of a national series and organizers said future festivals will offer more attractions—adding fresh culture to the area.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Some New Carlisle residents are upset over rising property taxes and talked to county officials today—one reported a nearly $1,300 increase while another saw taxes jump from $3,800 to $7,100. The county assessor said he will fix errors in property data and that affected homeowners can appeal with the Tax Board by June 16th.  WSBT
  • Today, the South Bend Common Council will vote on a rezoning plan that expands the east side baseball fields with additional diamonds, an indoor facility, parking, walking paths, and a playground that reaches into Tarkington Park. The city's Board of Zoning Appeals approved the proposal earlier—when the East Side Baseball and Softball Association said the expansion was needed despite neighbor concerns about traffic and noise.  WSBT

  • Mackie is an 8-month-old pup from the South Bend Animal Resource Center who loves to play and run around people — he is heartworm negative, up to date on his shots, and fixed — making him a good match for active families with older kids.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Purdue guard Rashunda Jones — a South Bend native and Washington High graduate — transferred to Michigan State after entering the transfer portal on March 31. At Purdue she averaged 7.8 points as a freshman and 9.8 points last season while Purdue failed to qualify for the Big Ten tournament and Michigan State ended a strong season at 22-10.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame basketball added former Northern Arizona power forward Carson Towt on Sunday to rebuild its defense after a tough season. He is a 6 ft 8 in player from Gilbert—he led NAU in rebounding—and will work with the team as they prepare for 2025-26.  South Bend Tribune
  • YMCA of Greater Michiana is sponsoring this week’s South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week vote for April 7-13 and the poll now allows one vote per hour per device, with voting open until 11:59 p.m. on April 17. Voters can choose among five athletes (from Dowagiac, Penn, South Bend Adams, South Bend Saint Joseph, and South Bend Trinity) who had strong performances despite spring break changes.  South Bend Tribune
