  • Mishawaka Troop Town is officially full, now housing six men + two women who served our country; the village offers veterans a family-like home and fresh start. Organizers report that reaching full capacity confirms the critical need for supportive veteran housing.  WSBT
  • Cultivate Food Rescue co-founder Jim Conklin was honored on Monday in South Bend with the Community Impact Award from Impact Ministries of Michiana — recognizing his efforts in fighting food insecurity and redirecting rescued food to those in need.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The owners of Plymouth Motor Speedway announced over the weekend that the track will be up for sale, like South Bend Motor Speedway, and the Sauer family confirmed on Facebook that the 2026—2027 racing season will run as scheduled with new ownership needed to keep local racing going.  ABC 57

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Friday, NIPSCO locked out about 1,600 United Steelworkers members after the union and the company failed to reach a contract agreement by the deadline; the lockout will continue until the union accepts its last, best, and final offer (union representatives noted the workers were ready to negotiate).  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The new Indiana Diploma gives Class of 2029 freshmen more work-based learning and real-world prep, as Operation Education highlights how high school will change. Concord Community Schools leads apprenticeship efforts and the program airs Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on WSBT22 News.  WSBT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Bend's Organic Resource facility sorts yard waste to remove trash and other non-compostable items, turning it into mulch and compost. The process repurposes waste and helps reduce landfill material.  South Bend Tribune

  • Voting opened on April 13 at 8:24 a.m. ET for the South Bend Tribune high school Athlete of the Week poll, featuring 18 nominees from 12 local schools in three sports from April 6-11. Votes will be accepted until Thursday, April 16 at 11:59 p.m. ET.  South Bend Tribune
  • Jairo Rubio, head groundskeeper for the South Bend Cubs since 2020, works behind the scenes to prepare Four Winds Field for each gameday by keeping the infield level and moist amidst unpredictable Michiana weather—his crew starts right after the previous game ends.  ABC 57
  • Notre Dame cornerback Mark Zackery played point guard for the basketball team after the starting guard was injured — he returned to football to boost his performance for a playoff run.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame defensive tackle Elijah Hughes, who transferred from USC last fall, impressed his coach at spring practice yesterday in South Bend (he worked hard during drills and pushed his limits).   • Cassandre Prosper, the ACC Most Improved Player, was selected 19th overall by the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Draft, joining former teammate Sonia Citron. The 20-year-old will begin her professional career after a standout season with Notre Dame.  South Bend Tribune
  • Libby Yergler now leads the South Bend Saint Joseph girls tennis team as captain and top singles player. The Huskies will open their season today at New Prairie despite playing off-campus due to home court renovations (resumption expected May 1).  South Bend Tribune
  • In South Bend on April 13, Notre Dame beat North Carolina 10-5, making the Fighting Irish the new No. 1 men’s lacrosse team after a historic two-week run that included an earlier win over Richmond. Teddy Lally scored a hat-trick and goalie Thomas Ricciardelli made 15 saves.  South Bend Tribune
