Good morning, South Bend. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The University of Notre Dame and DIRECTV partnered in the Goals for Good campaign, donating $10 for every lacrosse goal to Ronald McDonald House Charities to help families with children receiving medical care. The campaign supports both men’s and women’s teams as it raises funds to provide a place for families to stay away from the hospital.  ABC 57

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A burst water line flooded and closed Western Avenue (between Wellington Street and Illinois Street) today as South Bend Police alerted residents at 2:48 a.m. that basements may flood while crews work to shut off the line and begin repairs.  ABC 57

CRIME NEWS

  • Seventeen-year-old pedestrian was struck by a Toyota Tacoma at the intersection of Mishawaka and Longfellow Avenues Sunday afternoon — she remains in critical condition while the driver, Gregory Michael Durling, is held in custody pending charges.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Joseph County Assessor Michael Castellon held a town hall meeting last Sunday with neighbors in Stone Oaks Estates near New Carlisle to explain why rising property values have led to higher taxes. He said a housing shortage, calculation errors and incoming development contributed to the increases and announced changes including a new land study for next year, an online appeal process starting May 1 — appeals due by June 16 — and a three-year 2 percent tax credit for homeowners 55 and older.  ABC 57
  • The northbound lanes on the Main Street bridge over the Toll Road in Mishawaka are closed due to a major construction project near Walmart and Super Target that began April 14th. Detour routes will be posted on Grape Road by University Drive or Douglas Road and crews expect to finish phase I in July with the full project wrapping up mid to late October.  WSBT
