COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Unity Gardens will host an Earth Day celebration on April 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3701 Prast Blvd. in South Bend. It offers workshops (Seed Bomb at 9, Foraging Walk at 11, History Tour at 1), award presentation at noon, volunteer work and food from Franky's Tacos.  South Bend Tribune
  • Portage Township is offering $20 gift cards for laundry assistance at Burton's Laundry to residents already receiving township aid. The Spring Cleaning program starts today and will run until all 200 cards are distributed, with plans to potentially return in the fall.  South Bend Tribune

  • After 26 years at the Marycrest Building, Radio Sabor Latino moved into the historic WNIT Public Television building on West Jefferson Boulevard to continue serving the Latino community (its journey began in the former WSBT studio).  WSBT

  • GEARS Youth Robotics Center's XLR8 team won the Indiana state championship in Osceola on March 31 + will head to Houston for the national championship soon.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Braun announced Tuesday morning that Indiana will invest $200 million in its voucher program to boost childcare enrollment from 14,000 to 57,000 children—local daycares are preparing to welcome more families starting with siblings of current participants.  ABC 57
  • Gov. Braun announced the Iron Nation-Indiana program to connect Israeli tech companies with local operations and collaborate with universities and healthcare systems. The state contributed $15 million as part of a $60 million project initiated on April 14.  WSBT
  • Downtown Colfax Avenue is closed for a months-long streetscape project, the city announced. Utility work began April 13 at the Niles intersection, and Phase One will start April 20 from East Bank Trail to Hill Street with detours via Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Eddy Street.  ABC 57
