ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A water line burst flooded Western Avenue between Wellington and Illinois Streets Tuesday as crews worked to fix the line — leaving some homes without water and yards flooded — while motorists were urged to follow detours. WSBT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ School district leaders in St. Joseph County discussed the impact of Senate Bill 1 on Tuesday after Governor Braun signed the law that lowered property taxes, triggering a projected $744 million loss for Indiana schools. SBCSC is expected to lose $27.4 million, PHM schools $6.9 million + the School City of Mishawaka up to $3.9 million as districts adjust their budgets. ABC 57
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The federal tax filing deadline passed on April 15; if you requested an extension, you have until Oct. 15 to file your return. Indiana taxpayers also have until Nov. 17 to file—though you must pay at least 90% of your tax by the original deadline to avoid extra charges. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ South Bend's Common Council approved a rezoning ordinance Monday night that will expand East Side Youth Baseball and Softball fields by adding a new indoor facility, parking, more baseball diamonds, walking paths and playgrounds that stretch into Tarkington Park — officials said the change was needed to meet growing demand — as plans move to design and build the project. - ➤ On April 17th at 7 p.m., Parks Superintendent Phil Blasko will speak at St. Bavo Parish to update residents on park improvements, including details on the multi-phase Rose Park project that began with a splash pad, playground and pavilion last July. He will outline future plans—such as converting historic structures to a concessions area and adding outdoor bowling courts and athletic fields—that will further transform the park. - ➤ The Indiana Senate passed a bill to cut property taxes that will save homeowners $1.2 billion over three years while reducing local government and school funding by $1.5 billion. The House made many changes to the bill after Gov. Braun threatened a veto and he said he will sign it as soon as he receives it—keeping his promise for property tax relief. WSBT
- ➤ Indiana Governor Mike Braun expanded the state of disaster emergency to 35 counties including local areas like Elkhart, LaPorte and LaGrange after severe storms on March 30 damaged the region. The declaration allows the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to provide financial help to the hardest hit areas. WSBT

- ➤ The WNBA Draft held Monday in New York City saw Notre Dame women's basketball players selected. Among the draftees, guard Sonia Citron was picked as the No. 3 selection—she averaged 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds last season—and forward Maddy Westbeld and guard Liatu King were also chosen.
