COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders and volunteers teamed up Friday to remove illegal dumping from Elwood to Keller and Olive to Wilbur Streets (the second cleanup effort this year) as they work to keep neighborhoods vibrant.  WSBT
  • Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County celebrated Amber Bridgeman’s new home with a ribbon cutting on Friday, April 17 as local staff, friends and family joined the event. The organization plans to build 110 houses in the next five years — a sign of growing community support.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe’s shoppers who made purchases in 2019 may be eligible for about $102.45 each from a $7.4 million class action settlement. Claims must be filed by June 9 for those shopping at South Bend and other nearby locations in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.  South Bend Tribune
  • NIPSCO and United Steelworkers reached a tentative contract agreement, but the lockout remains in effect as the deal awaits ratification. Negotiations began on Jan. 20 after the previous contract expired on March 31 and have caused longer power restoration times for local communities, affecting about 1,600 workers (USW).  WNDU
  • Walmart is remodeling its Mishawaka store at 316 Indian Ridge Blvd this year with new layouts, technology and services to make shopping easier and faster. The store will remain open during the upgrade—part of a plan to update over 650 locations nationwide.  South Bend Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Luke Combs and special guests will perform at Notre Dame Stadium today starting at 5:20 p.m., with parking opening at 12 p.m. and gates at 5 p.m.—campus road changes and transit options are in place to ease concert traffic.  WNDU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Edison Road between Tulip and Sage Roads in St. Joseph County is closed until April 23 due to recent weather and ongoing gas line repairs. The project was originally expected to finish Friday.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local allergy season is intensifying at Leeper Park where rising pollen levels and warmer temperatures are causing sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. South Bend allergist Dr. Sohaib Aleem advises residents to follow an environmental control plan (including pre-meds) to ease symptoms and enjoy spring outdoors.  WNDU

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Sheriff is a charming 1½-year-old adoptable dog, weighing 69 lb, who is up to date on vaccinations and neutered. He needs a home with a fenced yard and older children and is ready for adoption at Pet Refuge (4626 Burnett Drive in South Bend).  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame basketball teams (men’s and women’s) will head to Rome for the Eternal City Tip Off as they will meet Pope Leo, play Villanova on Nov. 1, and attend a mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica.  WSBT
  • Notre Dame women’s basketball added former Louisville forward Anaya Hardy on April 17 to boost their frontcourt after KK Bransford’s departure and the graduation of top players; Hardy started 27 games last season and averaged 4.9 points and 4.2 rebounds, and coach Ivey praised her energy and athleticism.  South Bend Tribune
  • KK Bransford did not return to play for Notre Dame women’s basketball and entered the transfer portal after dealing with injury setbacks — her decision came as the team wrapped a season where she was seen as a key bench player.  South Bend Tribune
