- ➤ Farmers warn drivers to share county roads with large slow moving equipment as planting season approaches. Farmer Dave Schrock advises drivers to pull safely off the road so the equipment can pass. WSBT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Early Friday morning, a Mishawaka police officer and his K9 partner tracked a stolen vehicle from Wisconsin and pursued its occupants; after a minor crash, the two 33-year-old men fled on foot and were later arrested at a garage on West Lawrence Street—both now face charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement, burglary and leaving the scene of a property damage crash. - ➤ Scott Allen Reed, 43, was arrested Thursday morning by the St. Joseph County Police on S. 23rd Street for failing to appear on a bench warrant for possession of methamphetamine, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, and possession of paraphernalia—police also charged him with theft after recovering a stolen motorcycle from Elkhart County. - ➤ South Bend Police responded to reports of a possible shooting on the 700 block of Indiana and Dubail and asked residents to avoid the scene—additionally, the 1600 block of High St is blocked off. ABC 57
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Backed by The Mind Trust and delivered by Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northern Indiana Corridor, a free five-week summer program helped 2,500 rising 1st to 9th graders in the region improve their reading and math scores last year. The program showed a 26-point gain in English Language Arts and a 24-point gain in math, and it comes as new state support mandates extra help for third graders who do not pass the IREAD assessment. - ➤ Drivers face delays on Ironwood Drive at Ireland Road as construction slows traffic and limits lanes; westbound turns from Ireland Road to Ironwood Drive are blocked. Phase two begins Monday, April 21—restricting the intersection to one through lane and one left turn lane—while projects continue until early July. WSBT
- ➤ The City of South Bend announced Friday that the Ireland Road and Ironwood Drive Intersection Improvement Project is moving into Phase 2 with work shifting to the northeast corner starting Monday, April 21st. Traffic through the intersection will be limited to one through lane and one left turn lane while westbound vehicles will not be allowed to turn right; drivers will follow a detour—west on Ireland Road, north on Miami Street, then east on Lincoln Way East—and crews will reconstruct the pavement, realign curbs and upgrade traffic signals with completion expected by early July weather permitting. - ➤ Notre Dame women's basketball signed Gisela Sanchez from Barcelona on Friday, adding a 6—4 player who played at Kansas State last season and competed in international tournaments for Spain.
