COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ABC57's Summer Horan spoke with U93's Big Perm about the eight annual Summer Activities Expo at Century Center today, where the event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—free to the public—and offers details on camps, programs, and seasonal events in Michiana.  ABC 57
  • Volunteers and 350 students planted 50 trees at Navarre Middle School last Friday to help South Bend work toward its urban tree canopy goal—an effort led by the Shirley Heinze Land Trust, South Bend Community School Corporation and Amazon volunteers. A donation from Amazon paid for the trees’ long-term maintenance, mayor James Mueller said.  WSBT

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were arrested after an hours-long standoff near downtown South Bend on Thursday—police spotted 49-year-old Terrance Snelling Jr. entering a West Marion Street home where a firearm and suspected drugs were found—and also took 70-year-old Donald Anderson and 46-year-old Jameelah Thompson into custody, all facing several preliminary charges.  WSBT

  • Brice Bellman of Penn High was named the South Bend Tribune Student of the Week for April 21 — his academic excellence and passion for aerospace engineering helped him stand out. He will study aerospace engineering at Purdue next year.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the St. Joseph County Highway Department said Fir Road (between Douglas and Day Roads) will be closed on April 29 for tree removal and cleanup. The work is expected to last only a few hours before the road reopens.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts was picked by the Atlanta Falcons as the 96th overall selection in the third round of the NFL Draft. The two-time All-American and 2023 Nagurski Trophy winner is expected to boost the team’s defense — a move that reflects his strong college performance.  South Bend Tribune
  • Former Notre Dame football cornerback Benjamin Morrison was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round at 53rd overall after a season-ending hip surgery. He said his pre-draft interview turned into a reunion with coach Todd Bowles—who once played with his father—while he now looks to prove his skills with his new team.  South Bend Tribune
