COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Bend's Music Village will host its annual Block Party at Howard Park on Saturday, May 3 from 1 to 8 p.m. (free admission) and will feature live music, interactive drumming and dancing, food trucks, kids activities, and a raffle (benefiting its tuition assistance program).  South Bend Tribune
  • The LaSalle Branch of the St. Joe County Public Library in South Bend will close May 11 for renovations that add 2,000 square feet for a community art studio—lounge, reservable meeting space and a travel-themed children’s play area. It will reopen Spring 2026 and visitors should use the Western Branch while work is in progress.  WSBT

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning just after 7 a.m., police in Mishawaka took a woman into custody after she threatened a man with a machete at Hickory Village Apartments—police reported a 90-minute standoff before sending her to a hospital for a mental health evaluation while filing reports with the county prosecutor.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Studebaker National Museum will host its first 'Cars & Coffee' event on Saturday, May 3 from 8 to 10 a.m. at 201 Chapin St. — the event will feature Michiana Brits with free coffee, doughnuts, and admission to both museum galleries.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana River Rescue School is hosting springtime week-long swift water rescue training sessions at East Race Waterway to prepare first responders from across the country; the training includes boating skills and in-water drills using props like a sunken car. Instructors say the unique setting—offering a semi-controlled environment—helps teams build real-world rescue skills.  ABC 57
  • South Bend Community School Corp has changed school start times for the next school term after a board meeting on April 28—middle school students will begin classes one hour earlier and Clay International Academy students will start two hours earlier than before.  South Bend Tribune
  • Ivy Tech is hosting Ivy Impact this week to train students for tech jobs as new data centers open in Michiana through a partnership with Amazon in St. Joseph County. The program gives students hands-on preparation for local career opportunities.  ABC 57
  • South Bend Community School Corporation is investigating claims that a teacher awarded credits with minimal work—28 students earned credit for one hour and 44 for five—when no student spent more than 8.5 hours on a course. The board is also reviewing contracts for Brown Intermediate renovations that may have exceeded a $5 million cap, including a nearly $500,000 painting contract plus an extra invoice for furniture, with no timeline yet set.  WSBT
