COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YWCA of North Central Indiana is sharing resources for people in abusive situations. Amanda Ceravolo said anyone in danger should call 911 and reach out to crisis counselors (call 1-866-YES-YWCA or 800-799-SAFE) for help and shelter.  WNDU
  • Anderson Trail County Park in Granger reached a major milestone as officials completed earthwork and installed two ponds and trail markers on the 115-acre project. The park, funded by a park bond, is set to open in spring — with parking areas, a playground and additional features planned.  WSBT
  • Listening Session 1 is today at Charles Martin Youth Center — 802 Lincolnway West — from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with additional sessions on Monday, May 4 and a three-day planning process on May 18, 19 and 21. Residents can share ideas to help shape the corridor’s future.  WNDU

  • Crunch Fitness is coming to a Mishawaka shopping center on Grape Road (next to Ashley Furniture) where it will offer group classes, a large free weight area, hydromassage beds, and U-V tanning; the opening date is not yet set.  WNDU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition runs May 8-10 at the University of Notre Dame where junior and senior ensembles compete for over $60,000 in cash prizes and performance opportunities. The event features more than 200 performances and concludes May 10 at 3:30 p.m. with an awards concert (livestreamed online).  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Beckie Hernandez, a Spanish teacher at John Adams High School, was named Teacher of the Year on April 23 at the 47th annual celebration, and Melissa Scott was honored as District Runner-Up.  South Bend Tribune
  • NASA's Kelsey Young, Artemis II Lunar Science lead, spoke on Tuesday, Apr. 28 at DeBartolo Hall in Notre Dame in South Bend — she shared striking lunar photos and earned a standing ovation from the audience.  South Bend Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC warned of a salmonella outbreak tied to backyard poultry that sickened 34 people, including 3 in Indiana and 13 hospitalized, as of April 29. Local residents are urged to wash hands well and keep bird supplies outside (using dedicated boots can help lower the risk).  South Bend Tribune

  • South Bend residents are advised to plan their gardens carefully before buying supplies today, with tips that include checking seller reviews (and inspecting plants for pests) to avoid costly mistakes this season.  South Bend Tribune
