COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Music Village held a free block party for families in downtown South Bend on Saturday—community members gathered to dance and enjoy the celebration. Executive Director Josh Aerie discussed the event on WSBT 22's First in the Morning.  WSBT
  • Bendix Woods County Park's Nature Center hosted an open house Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to mark the grand opening of its renovated Discovery Room (its first major remodel in nearly 35 years) and it now offers interactive exhibits for kids and families including a live beehive display and a pond life exploration area.  WSBT

  • Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is asking for help finding a missing woman and her three children who were last seen in the Mishawaka area—call 911 if you have any information.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tribute Fest will take place on May 10 at Ironworks Plaza in Mishawaka with tribute bands performing hits by Elton John, John Mellencamp and Garth Brooks. Gates will open at 3 p.m. and the event will feature three 90-minute sets by Small Town from 4 to 5:30 p.m., No Fences from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Elton Jeff from 8 to 9:30 p.m., while tickets cost $15 per person and children 5 and younger get in free.  South Bend Tribune
  • The 52nd annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition runs from May 8 to 11 at the University of Notre Dame and hosts free events showcasing top chamber music talent. The semifinal and final rounds on May 10 and 11 will be livestreamed on fischoff.org—letting local and international audiences watch the performances.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend Community Schools ended its maintenance contract to insource building repairs and SSC Services for Education filed a WARN notice with the state reporting that 203 employees—electricians, groundskeepers, landscapers and mechanics—will be laid off effective June 30, a move expected to save $3 to 5 million a year.  WSBT
  • Today, more than 100 protestors gathered at Jon Hunt Memorial Plaza in downtown South Bend to protest federal and state policies they say harm workers' rights, unions and safety at work — with some raising concerns about women's rights, social security and immigration. Organizers said the event also helped collect donations for local food pantries.  WSBT
  • On May 1, 2025, the Indiana River Rescue School trained first responders in South Bend as they practiced rescuing victims from a submerged vehicle in the East Race Waterway.  South Bend Tribune
