- ➤ Penn High School senior Amina Spahic led her tennis team to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over rival St. Joe on April 30 and balanced athletic success with top academics and club involvement — including debate and cultural clubs — as she prepares to attend Notre Dame next year. South Bend Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday at Lydick Bog Nature Preserve to mark its 93-acre expansion (which extended trails and improved public access) while officials noted efforts to curb invasive species and plant natives for increased biodiversity. WSBT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayflower Road Bridge reopened after a year-long repair project ended May 3. The repairs replaced one approach slab (the concrete structure connecting the bridge to the roadway) as part of a broader plan that initially called for replacing two bridge superstructures. WSBT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Primary Care Partners of South Bend is testing a new model that uses artificial intelligence and eye tracking to diagnose autism early in young children. The program is part of a statewide network with over 20 locations and is expected to expand locally in the coming years. WSBT
- ➤ Health officials from the county and state are investigating a salmonella outbreak that made 23 inmates sick last week at the jail; tests are pending after a recent kitchen inspection noted two minor issues (standing water and mold on racks). WSBT
