  • The Food Bank of Northern Indiana will hold its 33rd National Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9, aiming for over 100,000 pounds of non-perishables—South Bend residents can drop off donations by their mailboxes or at Martin’s Super Market barrels in the area.  South Bend Tribune
  • MACOG launches Bike Challenge Month starting Monday with the Go574 app - riders earn rewards including gift cards, South Shore Line tickets for four trips and an e-bike entry after 25 rides by May 31.   • The South Bend Tribune has opened nominations for the 2026 Community Choice Awards (which honor the best local businesses) with submissions starting tomorrow through May 20.   • LOGAN held an all-abilities prom at Four Winds Casino for 300 people 15 and up to dance and socialize, offering a safe space for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities — the organization will host its Developmental Screening Day on Tuesday, May 19 to analyze children's social and emotional skills.  WNDU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Marian High School assistant coach Brian Foster underwent critical surgery on Sunday after a car crash involving a semi and is scheduled for another surgery today following a school mass held Monday to pray for his recovery.  WNDU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local concert events this week offer live music across the region—South Bend hosts The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight at Morris Performing Arts Center on May 6 at 8 p.m. while Four Winds Casino South Bend features varied shows from May 7–10.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue Polytechnic High School South Bend held its final prom on May 2 at Majestic on the River when its board voted to close the school and relinquish its charter; photos capture students celebrating one last time.  South Bend Tribune
  • The LaSalle Branch Library reopened Monday morning with a 2,000 sqft addition for community use and modernized interiors (new furniture, lighting, paint, and carpeting) that boost connection and creativity. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for next Tuesday.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Locust Road between Prairie Avenue and Ireland Road has been closed for sewer work since Monday, and drivers must use a detour via Gertrude Street and Linden Street (the route continues through Ewing Avenue) with work expected to finish Friday if weather holds.  WSBT
  • The Clay Street railway crossing in Mishawaka closed for road work on Monday, May 4 and crews will resurface the street until May 15 (drivers are advised to use Liberty Drive and Logan Street).  WSBT
  • Drivers on the Toll Road near South Bend face a detour today as scheduled work closes the Exit 72 ramp from US-31 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with detour signs posted along the route.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • At its meeting on Monday, the IHSAA board voted 17 to 1 against a 35-second shot clock for varsity basketball set for the 2028-29 season because many principals and athletic directors opposed the proposal due to cost and staffing concerns.  South Bend Tribune
  • Indiana high school athletes can now monetize their name, image and likeness following the IHSAA board's approval of a Personal Branding Activity rule on Monday, May 4 — guidelines require athletes to avoid school branding in their deals.  South Bend Tribune
