COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The National Association of Letter Carriers is leading the Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 10 to collect nonperishable food for the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, which restocks its shelves for the summer when donations drop. Residents in St. Joseph County are urged to leave groceries by their mailbox before 8 a.m. (or drop them off at postal branches or designated Food Bank barrels) to help meet the 100,000-pound goal.  South Bend Tribune
  • WSBT took home several awards at the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists Awards on Friday evening in Carmel—earning honors for Best Newscast, Education Coverage, Children's Issues, and Sports Reporting. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A barn fire in Mill Creek killed nine farm animals used for 4-H, and a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy rescued several sheep—firefighters diverted flames from stored chemicals to prevent a toxic vapor while investigators work to determine the cause.  South Bend Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • South Bend police arrested two men Tuesday morning at the Potawatomi Zoo after an alarm led officers to find bolt cutters and a cut in the zoo fence—one suspect admitted to cutting the fence while the other denied involvement and both are held at St. Joseph County Jail pending formal charges.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artist Freddy Rodriguez painted a mural on the outfield wall at Foundry Field at South East Neighborhood Park on Saturday, May 3 — the work highlights the Latino community and local baseball players in South Bend.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Investigators uncovered evidence that South Bend Community School Corporation altered over 2,500 grades in high school courses over a three-year period, with many changes in senior classes made from May to June+ the Indiana Department of Education is monitoring the investigation and district officials plan to discuss further findings at a board meeting on May 12th.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend schools will be able to rehire former SSC Services for Education employees when the district insources maintenance on July 1 after ending its contract with SSC. A WARN notice said SSC laid off 203 workers starting June 30—and many electricians, mechanics and groundskeepers are eager to return—after they shifted from district employment in 2022.  South Bend Tribune
