  • Today, letter carriers are collecting food donations for the 33rd annual Stamp-Out Hunger drive to help restock local food banks heading into summer. Residents are asked to place a sturdy bag of nonperishable items by their mailbox by 8 a.m.  WNDU
  • South Bend Bike Garage celebrated its ribbon cutting on Friday morning after nearly a year on Wayne Street offering bikes, repairs and classes ahead of Bike to Work Week. The garage is open Wednesdays 5 p.m.–8 p.m. and seeks funds to add a bathroom and sink (to expand service).  WNDU
  • The Hoosier Lottery supports teachers and first responders during Teacher Appreciation Week and National Police Week by donating $30 million to the Teachers’ Retirement Fund + $30 million to police and firefighters’ pensions, while its surplus fund helps lower vehicle excise taxes statewide.  WNDU

  • Indiana Governor Mike Braun is extending the state’s gas tax holiday to help lower gas prices by nearly 12.5 percent. GasBuddy analysis indicates it will take a few days before stations begin passing the decrease on after selling through taxed fuel.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • A commission report finds Black residents, especially in LaSalle Park, face shorter lifespans from decades of redlining + pollution; it was filed on May 4 and released on May 7 by Black Lives Matter South Bend, with a public meeting set for Tuesday, May 12 at the Charles Black Center.  South Bend Tribune
  • Dr. Joyce Adams — a Notre Dame associate professor and maternal research lead — is partnering with Beacon Health System to pilot a new postpartum care model in the South Bend-Elkhart area to support mothers after childbirth during Maternal Mental Health Month and Mother's Day weekend.  WNDU
