COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The LaSalle Branch of the St. Joe County Public Library will close Sunday for major renovations, and an art studio, meeting space, a children's play area and upgraded furniture will be added to the building — changes that will improve its services. The project is expected to wrap up in spring 2026.  WSBT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A driver died in a single-vehicle crash in South Bend when police saw his car leave Huey Street at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 before it veered into a tree after he exited the moving vehicle.  South Bend Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • South Bend police tried to stop a stolen vehicle on Elwood St. and Olive St. but the driver did not stop, led officers on a chase and hit a bicyclist who went to the hospital for leg pain—officers later found the empty car at Woodward Ave. and Vassar Ave. and continue to search for the suspect.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tribune has nominated students from Saint Joe High and Mishawaka High for Student of the Week, listing finalists (Riley Sproles and Teddy Berente). Readers may vote until noon Thursday, May 15, with the winner featured online Friday and in Monday's print edition.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend's police merit commission is set to take over officer hiring, promotions and disciplinary actions once its rules are approved. The commission elected Dan Jones as president, Pam Claeys as vice president and Brantley Taylor as secretary — it will review its bylaws in a June meeting as discussions continue.  South Bend Tribune
  • The South Bend Police Department will host events for National Police Week from May 11 to May 17 with a public Police Memorial Service set for May 16 at 7:30 p.m.—if inclement weather occurs, the service will be held inside the department's auditorium as FOP Lodges honor fallen officers.   • Ziggy is a three-year-old dog who loves squeaky toys and knows commands; he was surrendered last week when his owners moved out of state and is ready to be adopted today at the South Bend Animal Resource Center—he is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and good with both cats and dogs.  WSBT
