CRIME NEWS

  • A 63-year-old Florida man (Stephen Forte) was found guilty of abusive sexual contact and interference with the duties of a flight crew member during a flight from St. Petersburg, Fla. to South Bend after a one-day jury trial, and his sentencing will be held on Sept. 5 at 10 a.m.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Joseph County Fire Territory unveiled its new Station 18 in Warren Township Tuesday, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art facility where 12 firefighters now live, work and relax on-site — officials stated that the township plans to convert the old fire department building into a community center and add ambulance service soon.  ABC 57
  • Gov. Mike Braun signed House Bill 1390 today, updating BMV services and banning ads for marijuana products—leaving it unclear if current ads will remain until their existing contracts expire. The bill lets the BMV issue electronic certificates and temporary permits while offering new license plate designs.  ABC 57
  • A new state law limits South Bend’s ability to raise property taxes and manage revenue, forcing city and school officials to adjust budgets and use extra steps for new measures. City leaders will update future plans and work with nearby towns to address these changes—hoping to keep essential services intact.  South Bend Tribune
  • LaSalle Library Branch will begin a one-year renovation as part of a 10-year plan to update county libraries, adding a 2,000-square-foot expansion with a new children’s travel-themed section and more meeting rooms—patrons are advised to visit other branches during the work. A yard sale will run tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the branch to help offset costs, and the library is set to reopen in spring 2026.  ABC 57
