CRIME NEWS

  • A couple in Mishawaka is asking for help after a thief stole items worth about $5K from their storage unit, including a time capsule set to be opened on their first anniversary tomorrow, and they offer a $100 reward for its return.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Bend native Vivica A. Fox stars in the revenge thriller Is God Is, premiering today at AMC Classic South Bend 16 (450 W. Chippewa Ave) and Cinemark South Bend Movies 14 (910 W. Edison Road). The film features Sterling K. Brown, Janelle Monáe and Mykelti Williamson, with screenings running through the weekend.  South Bend Tribune
  • A new Festival Guide lists hundreds of local events including cycling tours, artisan fairs and home festivals for all ages in South Bend and surrounding areas. The guide will be updated with detailed schedules for summer, fall and winter events.  South Bend Tribune
  • A historical marker for the iconic 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' song will be dedicated at 4:30 p.m. May 15 at the Historic Sons of Israel Ball Park Synagogue courtyard at Four Winds Field — Rabbi Michael Friedland will give a keynote and refreshments will be provided by South Bend Challah Company.  South Bend Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local farmers are planting crops amid record-high diesel prices of $6.13 and rising fertilizer costs, plus many say rising expenses may lead to higher grocery bills for consumers.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Zolman Tire celebrated high school seniors at its Student Leadership Awards on Wednesday evening, awarding each qualifying student 1,000 dollars in scholarships to support further education; the company has given nearly 75,000 dollars to students over the years.  WSBT
  • Stanley Clark School held a sendoff for its middle school Science Olympiad team on May 8 in South Bend. The team will represent Indiana at the National Science Olympiad Tournament at USC (University of Southern California) on May 22-23.  South Bend Tribune
  • Saint Mary’s College in South Bend received a record $7.5 million donation from alumna Lorraine Sheehan Wilson and her husband, Chris. The new Wilson Sheehan Scholarship Fund will offer need-based aid beginning in the 2027–28 school year to help make college more affordable.  WNDU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Braun signed a bill on Wednesday, May 13 banning cellphones and smartwatches in classrooms from bell to bell (which includes exceptions for emergencies, students with IEPs or 504 plans, and medical needs) while directing the education department to offer model policy language for schools.  WNDU
  • South Bend International Airport began a $20 million upgrade of its front drive drop-off area yesterday that adds a new lane for taxis, shuttles, Uber and Lyft + raised crosswalks, new canopies and a median, with work set to finish in August 2027.  WSBT
  • Starting Friday, May 15, the northbound lanes of Grape Road over the Indiana Toll Road will be reduced to one lane between Indiana Ridge Blvd and University Drive as a construction company begins work to replace the pedestrian walkway (completion is expected by June 25, weather permitting).  WSBT

  • Notre Dame lacrosse coach Kevin Corrigan uses Lou Holtz’s time-tested approach to build his team’s strength, preparing them for a challenging quarterfinal matchup with Johns Hopkins this weekend — a game set to test both teams’ relentlessness.  South Bend Tribune
  • Lucas Bradshaw, a New Prairie baseball player who suffered a severe brain injury in a spring bus crash involving an impaired driver, has returned to the dugout as he continues his recovery with strong support from his teammates, his father said.  WSBT
