COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cinemark is offering South Bend families discounted summer movie tickets at $1.75 for 10 family-friendly films with food deals available from May 13 + Wednesday morning showings run from June 1 to Aug. 6 at Cinemark South Bend and SCREENX in Mishawaka.  South Bend Tribune
  • NIPSCO is hosting Community Customer Care Centers — help sessions that explain bills and energy assistance — to share energy-saving tips. The first session is Tuesday, June 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Century Center in downtown South Bend, with later events set for Gary and Fort Wayne.  WNDU
  • South Bend Tribune sports journalists Mike Berardino and Tom Noie earned APSE awards for coverage of a 2025 New Year's event in New Orleans, while photographer Michael Clubb received honors for best action photo; the winners will be honored at an APSE banquet on July 18 in Arlington.  South Bend Tribune
  • The St. Vincent de Paul Society reopened its community pantry yesterday in a new building by the South Street Transpo Station downtown — the pantry operates 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 100 West South Street, Suite 100 and offers improved access for bus riders.  WSBT
  • More than 100 K-12 athletes competed together at Steele Stadium during the annual Special Olympics Unified Champions Day held on Friday; local leaders such as Mayor Dave Wood & Park Superintendent Phil Blasko cheered the racers and led the ceremonial Olympic Torch Run.  WNDU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Last Thursday, the Mishawaka Fire Department responded to a fire at Grace Community Church and credited the church’s fire plan for evacuating kids and employees in under a minute while keeping utilities clear to limit damage.  WSBT

  • Shamrocks Sports Bar opened near Four Winds Field on May 13 in South Bend. The new venue offers a full bar + a menu with local favorites and memorabilia displays that welcome sports fans.  South Bend Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A South Korean paper reported yesterday that work on the GM and Samsung battery plant near New Carlisle was paused as GM reworked its EV strategy amid lower demand, according to an Indiana Economic Development Corporation spokesperson. The plant was to open by the end of 2027.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a dinner on May 13 (South Bend), supporters celebrated anchor Jennifer Copeland's legacy by launching her memorial scholarship. Riley High senior Meghan Freitag received the first award as nearly $70 thousand was raised to help mentor future journalists.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend held a groundbreaking yesterday on its northwest side for the new Kennedy Park project, which will feature a pool with a playground, an additional dry play area, and pickleball and basketball courts, with the pool opening by Fourth of July next summer.  WSBT
  • The historic interior rotunda of St. Joseph County Courthouse – built in 1896 and listed on the National Register – has been restored with period paint, stenciling, and repairs. The renovation by Conrad Schmitt Studios can now be viewed at 101 S. Main Street.  WNDU
  • South Bend will begin a project to upgrade the East Race Waterway and Riverwalk ($5.3 million investment) at the end of May. The renovations add a new plaza and dock access and replace a wooden bridge with a concrete walkway, temporarily limiting access to Seitz Park.  WSBT

  • South Bend has begun demolishing the longtime-vacant Qualex building after years of decay.  South Bend Tribune

  • Notre Dame lacrosse captain Christian Alacqua will compete in an NCAA quarterfinal match tomorrow at Hofstra University in New York when his team takes on unseeded Johns Hopkins, and he is set to graduate soon before enlisting in the Army.  South Bend Tribune
