CRIME NEWS

  • Norman Tackett, 46, reputed to lead the South Bend Hell’s Angels, was arrested on drug charges on Tuesday after police searched a Bourbon home and seized suspected methamphetamine plus drug paraphernalia; he remains in Marshall County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond while his first court appearance is pending.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The History Museum in South Bend has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50,000 by July 13 to fund repairs on the 1820 Pierre Navarre Log Cabin—planned improvements include fixing walls and windows as well as adding a portable ramp for handicapped access. If the goal is met, the museum will receive a dollar-for-dollar matching grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s CreatINg Places program for a total of $100,000.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Notre Dame College of Science will host Pint of Science: South Bend from May 19 to May 21 at Chicory Café, 105 E. Jefferson Blvd—where Kate Biberdorf, known as Kate the Chemist, will introduce researchers discussing how science blends with art, music and comic books. Attendees will enjoy trivia with prizes and a $2 cover each night.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Todd Rokita began an inquiry into whether Notre Dame's diversity, equity, and inclusion policies breach state and federal civil rights laws and nonprofit guidelines, and he gave the university until June 9 to reply—Notre Dame said it does not discriminate and seeks to mirror the broader Catholic Church.  South Bend Tribune
  • Senate Bill 2, which needs federal approval, would change Medicaid by adding work requirements, regular checks of eligibility, and a cap on recipients for Hoosiers. Lawmakers say the changes may cut state costs while critics worry the new rules could harm those who depend on the program.  WSBT
  • City officials, state legislators and council members gathered Thursday morning for a groundbreaking at the Byers Softball Complex — a project funded by a $3 million grant and set to improve fields, facilities, a splashpad and historical signage. R. Yoder Construction will complete the work by September while spring and summer games move to Boehm Park, Potawatomi Park and Boland Park fields.  ABC 57
  • On May 15, South Bend broke ground on a $3 million upgrade to Byers Softball Complex at 1300 S. Mayflower Road — the project will add new field work, signage, shade structures, batting cages and a splash pad while officials have moved spring and summer games to other local fields during renovations.  South Bend Tribune
