CRIME NEWS

  • South Bend Police are responding to a reported shooting at 2106 S Gerturde Street as of 8 p.m. and advise residents to avoid the area + no details on injuries or suspects have been released.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Miriam Aguilar opened her new bilingual childcare center inside the Emporium Building in South Bend’s East Race neighborhood on Monday. The center received a state grant from the FSSA micro-facility pilot program—helping home operators scale up—and now offers 30 daycare spots while teaching children Spanish for bilingual skills.  ABC 57
  • South Bend Community School Corporation said two Riley High School students in the Graphic Design CTE program earned national recognition in the 2025 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards — Jaylon Woods received a Gold Medal for his graphic design piece 'Marigold' and Sora Snyder earned a Silver Medal for their digital art 'Collage of Chaos.' They have been invited to a national celebration at Carnegie Hall to be honored with other top young artists.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend International Airport announced a $14 million expansion to improve traffic flow and traveler experience. Construction will start this summer and finish by summer 2026—using revenue sources rather than local tax dollars.  WSBT
  • South Bend will repave more than 90 streets this summer and spend about ($10 million) to reconstruct roads in poor condition. Road closures will occur during regular business hours (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) with paving taking three to five days per street and work continuing until mid-November.  WSBT
  • Drivers in South Bend faced a repaving project on Bendix Drive that began Monday between Cleveland and Portage—this work near the entrance to Meijer meant through traffic was rerouted. The project is expected to continue for two weeks—drivers are advised to plan alternate routes.  WSBT
  • South Bend announced on Monday that its 2025 paving season began this week with $10 million set aside for over 90 pavement projects across 48 lane miles, to be completed by city and contractor crews. Work will continue through mid-November and drivers should expect delays during construction hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.—signage will warn residents of street closures.  ABC 57
  • Former South Bend schools CFO Kareemah Fowler said at a press briefing on May 19 that the Brown Administration Building renovation cost $3.2 million and stayed under the board-approved $5 million budget—contradicting claims of a $5.7 million overspend. Her attorney added that board investigators have yet to contact Fowler and did not rule out a lawsuit.  South Bend Tribune
