COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Bend Cubs owner Andrew Berlin will receive the St. Joseph County Good Scout Award for boosting the economy — a nod to his downtown work. The LaSalle Council of Scouting America will host luncheon tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Event Center at the Cubs building.  South Bend Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Microsoft held an open house at Century Center today and invited residents and officials to hear about its proposed six-building data center near the Indiana Toll Road plus plans to manage utility rates and water use; the event ran from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  WNDU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local restaurant owners report beef prices rising from about $4 to over $6 per pound in recent months as a record-small cattle herd and soaring costs force price hikes at businesses, with prices expected to climb further to pass on extra expenses to customers in South Bend.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washington High School senior Jassiel Ibarra is set to graduate after missing 52 school days last year due to chronic absenteeism. He improved his attendance by joining sports and extra help programs and now plans to become an electrician.  WSBT
  • Amazon opened its Think Big Space STEM lab at New Prairie High School in New Carlisle on Monday, May 18 (fourth grade students toured the podcast studio as part of the launch).  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend's Reparatory Justice Commission released a draft report this month showing a long history of racial discrimination in housing, jobs, education and city facilities. The report calls for a formal apology and a permanent oversight committee with a Black majority—city officials are expected to finalize the report soon.  WNDU

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, doctors demonstrated the stroke treatment process from ambulance arrival to evaluation and CT scan with teleneurologist consultation. They stressed calling 911 when stroke symptoms appear and noted nearly 80 percent of strokes are preventable by managing health factors.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame lacrosse coach Kevin Corrigan will seek a third NCAA Tournament title in four years as he prepares his team for the Final Four showdown against Syracuse on Saturday, May 23 at 2:30 p.m. in Charlottesville (Syracuse coach Gary Gait says adjustments may give his team an edge).  South Bend Tribune
  • At Tuesday's IHSAA girls track sectionals at Steele Stadium, Washington senior Adriana Swanson set a personal record in the 300-meter hurdles, Adams sophomore Jaidyn Kimbrough won three races, and Penn sophomore Shreya Nayee added key wins to help secure Penn's team title.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame baseball ended its ACC Tournament drought with a 5-4 win over Clemson on Tuesday at Truist Field in Charlotte, N.C. Jayce Lee hit three extra-base hits as the team advanced and will face Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. today.  South Bend Tribune
