CULTURE NEWS

  • A new joint exhibition, Moments That Made US, is on display at Studebaker National Museum and The History Museum (897 Thomas St) until Jan. 3. The exhibit, part of America250, connects local history to the American story and launches a series of events including a June lecture on Lafayette.  South Bend Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Alan Hamlet of Notre Dame warned during a talk on Thursday night at the Elkhart County Historical Museum that rising temperatures are straining Midwest water sources (jeopardizing farming and raising flood risks). He said local leaders can work together to plan smart adaptations.  WNDU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at Memorial Hospital reported their patient load increased from four or five to six patients per nurse — a change that has raised concerns about delayed care. They met with administrators and surgeons to ask for a return to safer staffing levels.  WNDU
  • The Kindness to Prevent Blindness program provides free eye exams and custom glasses to underserved students as it travels to schools in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties. The program (launched in 2018 with help from Boling Vision Center) aims to bridge the referral gap.  WNDU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame lacrosse senior attackman Josh Yago (an Air Force grad transfer) leads the team with 47 points and will face Syracuse tomorrow in a Final Four qualifier at campus grounds.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame basketball will play an exhibition game at Dayton on Oct. 17 (as part of a Mental Health Awareness event benefiting Jay's Light) to debut its rebuilt roster for the 2026-27 season. The contest marks the first meeting between the teams since 1995.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend Saint Joseph girls tennis won its 18th IHSAA sectional championship yesterday as Coco Burfien and Libby Yergler each posted 2-0 wins. The team will face a regional semifinal opponent Tuesday at La Porte High School – a step toward their sixth straight regional title.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame lacrosse coach Kevin Corrigan honored the legacy of late captain Mike Sennett whose No. 40 jersey is worn by a current player to keep his memory alive on the team.  South Bend Tribune
  • Ron Shaffer resigned as head coach and dean of students at Plymouth after his January hiring and before coaching a game. Athletic director Josh Troyer said the school acted swiftly on the personnel change and will search for a replacement as official practices begin early August.  South Bend Tribune
