COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Realtors played a charity kickball game at Four Winds Field on Thursday as part of Ruoff Mortgage's fourth annual tournament—players donated to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and Ruoff matched each item, helping meet urgent food needs in South Bend. Medals, trophies, and bragging rights were awarded to the winners.  WSBT
  • The Humane Society of St. Joseph County and the Sheriff’s Department held a demonstration in Mishawaka on Wednesday to show how quickly parked cars can heat up even with windows cracked. Sheriff Bill Redman and Humane Society Executive Director Genny Brown used a digital thermometer plus heat gun to warn that children and pets can suffer heatstroke, urging anyone who sees an unattended vehicle with a child or pet to call 911.  ABC 57

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Mishawaka men were charged with shooting that injured one person on US 12 in Bertrand Township on June 6—both are set to be arraigned today as the investigation continues.  ABC 57
  • A traffic stop early Thursday led police to chase 39-year-old Keith Robertson—wanted on multiple warrants from Elkhart County—when he refused to pull over near McKinley Avenue and Twyckenham Drive in South Bend and Indiana State Police deployed stop sticks to end the chase, leading to his capture in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot in Mishawaka after he tried to run on foot.  ABC 57
  • Local nonprofit The Meow Mission condemned the cruelty when three Jayco employees were charged with felonies for putting two live cats in a trash compactor back in February & demanded the immediate firing of the company’s vice president who said the act benefited the firm.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three 'No Kings' protests will take place in the South Bend area on June 14 — with events at Jon R. Hunt Memorial Plaza from 1 to 3 p.m., at City Hall in Michigan City from noon to 2 p.m. CT, and in downtown Niles from 2 to 3 p.m. Organizers say the demonstrations will be peaceful and will also collect food donations for the Portage Pantry to support their stand against authoritarian policies.  South Bend Tribune
  • The South Shore Line will bus late evening eastbound passengers from Carroll Avenue to South Bend Airport to help with track construction. The bus service will run June 16—June 20 and bikes will not be allowed on the buses.  ABC 57
