COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bright Beginnings now offers one hour of free drop-in childcare through the Hot Car Initiative when temperatures exceed 75 degrees—this service helps keep children safe from heat stroke in parked cars. Program Director Ashley Nance said parents can quickly register and drop off their child without needing to explain their emergency care need.  WSBT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • No injuries were reported after a large fire broke out Tuesday evening in a field near New Carlisle—flames were seen near East US-20 and North 700 E, and fire crews quickly controlled the blaze with no damage to property or structures.  WSBT

CRIME NEWS

  • A shooting on July 5 in the 300 block of O’Brien Street in South Bend turned into a homicide investigation after officers responded at 11:20 p.m. Saturday and a 21-year-old man died from his gunshot wounds on July 7—an 18-year-old man received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Bend Schools placed transportation director LaToya King on administrative leave as she considers a role in Human Resources—she will be terminated if she does not accept—and named Robert Durm interim director to lead transportation under CFO Ahnaf Tahmid.  WSBT
  • South Bend school bus drivers will receive an extra $1000 this school year as the school board approved the one-time stipend Wednesday night—drivers can also earn up to $2500 for perfect attendance during the school year.  WSBT
  • South Shore Line will honor local teachers by offering free rides from July 14 to 20 when they show a valid school ID on off-peak weekday and weekend trains + children will ride free with each paying adult through the Kids Ride Free Program. The promotion aims to thank educators for their hard work + recognize their commitment to students.  ABC 57
  • Today, the South Bend School Board voted 5-2 to keep Clay High School active for school programs as the district appeals a decision that would let the building be sold for $1 — some trustees support using the space while others want funds to boost teacher salaries.  WSBT

  • South Bend native Ben Hawkins— a 2017 Adams grad— was hired as the Minnesota Vikings' Head Performance Dietitian in March after two years with the Chargers, and he will set up his team with tailored nutrition plans before training camp begins on July 26.  South Bend Tribune
