COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Community members gathered Tuesday at Rum Village Nature Center to share ideas for a proposed trail that will connect 160 acres of forest preserves, parks, and hiking trails in western St. Joseph County — one of four open houses planned this week to gather input for the project. WSBT
- ➤ Cultivate Food Rescue held a flip the switch ceremony Tuesday morning in South Bend to unveil a $1 million solar canopy that was the final part of a three-and-a-half-year capital campaign. The solar canopy will cut energy use by two thirds and save the organization over $30,000 a year. WSBT
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ St. Joseph County Police and Clay Fire Territory are responding to an eight-inch gas line that was struck in the 17000 block of Cleveland Road just after 7:30 a.m.—evacuations of homes and businesses are underway as roads remain closed and NIPSCO works to fix the leak. ABC 57
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, July 15, just before 7 p.m., South Bend police responded to a shooting near Huey and Roger Streets after a ShotSpotter alert led them to a man with gunshot wounds while another victim received treatment at Memorial Hospital—officers from the Violent Crimes Unit are investigating the incident. - ➤ Warrant officers from the St. Joseph County Police arrested four individuals on Monday at a South Bend residence on the 100 block of E. Jennings Street — 41-year-old Gabriel French was wanted for methamphetamine possession and theft, 21-year-old Jacob Tate had warrants for theft, possession of paraphernalia, and resisting law enforcement while facing an extra charge of false informing, 40-year-old Joseph Sullivan was wanted for public nudity, and 36-year-old Katherine Rivera faced multiple charges including unlawful possession of a handgun and false informing. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ South Bend Police said that several east side rail crossings were blocked Tuesday morning by a train with a mechanical issue, including those at Jefferson at 30th, Jefferson at 26th, Jefferson at Ironwood, and Jefferson at Greenlawn. The railroad company has not provided a time to move the train—officials said updates will follow. ABC 57
- ➤ After six years of renovations, Seitz Park in downtown South Bend has reopened with new restrooms, a raised riverwalk, and a rebuilt bandshell — upgrades delayed by scheduling issues and COVID-19 disruptions. Mayor James Mueller and Notre Dame officials will join a ribbon cutting tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. to officially open the park to the public. ABC 57
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ America’s Youth on Parade USA Twirling Championship is being held at the Joyce Center as 1,300 competitors gather—last year drawing about 9,000 attendees and nearly $1.5 million to the area. The event will run until Friday as athletes showcase family legacies and the mental focus required for the sport. ABC 57
- ➤ On Tuesday, ABC57 reporter Dante Stanton interviewed South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart who discussed the team's progress and the major construction at Four Winds Field. The team posted 11 wins & 10 losses since the mid-season break and is only one game and a half away from the playoffs, with players set to return for their next home stand this Friday. ABC 57
