- ➤ Downtown South Bend celebrated First Fridays on August 1—its theme was a little bit country—with Michigan Street between Washington and Wayne closed from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event featured a scavenger hunt, vintage market and live music with line dancing that aligned with South Bend Restaurant Weeks. - ➤ Dashawn Powell Jr., a 30-year-old man, was found guilty of felony murder and four counts of robbery for a 2021 South Bend incident on April 27 that killed Olivia Carillo and injured Jalen Cullens, with sentencing scheduled for August 29 at 11 a.m. WSBT

- ➤ The City of South Bend announced it will begin construction on streetscape improvements on Wall Street between Greenlawn Avenue and Ironwood Drive starting Aug. 4 as part of the River Park Neighborhood Plan. The project will add raised intersections, new sidewalks, 50 parking spaces — steps aimed at improving access to Potawatomi Park and the zoo, with phase one ending early September and phase two planned to last until early October weather permitting. - ➤ South Bend Police Department announced that 6-year-old Daniel Alarcon-Stigner won the 2025 Patch Coloring Contest with his design of a police car and an officer playing basketball with a kid that received 1,883 reactions with only 36 votes separating him from the runner-up. The winning design will be made into a limited-run embroidered patch available for purchase, will be showcased at National Night Out on Aug. 5, and will serve as the department’s profile picture on social media for a week. - ➤ The New Carlisle Fire Department said Tuesday that crew members pushed their new Tanker 91 into its bay—Tanker 91 is a 2025 Pierce on a Freightliner chassis with a 3,000-gallon water tank and a pump rated at 1,250 GPM that will boost water supply in areas without hydrants. ABC 57
