  • Community members delivered two custom benches—featuring the Paddy Shack logo and ice cream quotes—to the local ice cream shop after its original benches were stolen last weekend.  WSBT
  • South Bend Venues Parks and Arts held a groundbreaking ceremony at Leeper Park to start reconstructing tennis courts that honor David Filer, a local tennis star who died from brain cancer in 2023—his passion for the sport continues to inspire the project. The new courts will be finished by the end of September and will host the first National David Filer Memorial Tournament.  ABC 57
  • The LaSalle Park Neighborhood Alliance Association hosted a West Side Planning and Strategy meeting Thursday evening at the Western Branch Library to talk about issues such as housing shortages, education cuts, and the loss of the West Side Kroger — Black Lives Matter South Bend’s co-founder Jordan Giger asked key questions to guide a follow-up session that will build a local agenda.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • Art Beat will return to downtown South Bend tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with over 600 artists showcasing visual art, live performances, interactive activities and a record number of food vendors — local streets and designated lots provide parking options — organized by Downtown South Bend, Inc. and the city.  South Bend Tribune
  • The Morris Performing Arts Center is hosting American Theatre Guild’s production of Les Misérables, where stage manager Kenneth Davis explained that 85 professionals and 11 trucks transported the set from Knoxville to re-create early 1800s Paris. The design features 16 hidden speakers — blended into a cobblestone street with projected images of Victor Hugo’s paintings — while performances run Aug. 6-9 with additional matinees on Aug. 9 and Aug. 10.  South Bend Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • GO Electric Vehicle Indiana announced EV charger projects totaling over $3.3 million are planned statewide—three of which are local with Pilot Travel Centers in South Bend and Plymouth set to receive $122,812 and $199,316 respectively while Heartland Charging Services in Warsaw is allocated $250,000. The projects will support public EV charging and expand clean energy infrastructure.  ABC 57

  • The South Bend Fire Department is hosting a free firefighting career seminar Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Fire Training Center (710 E Sample St.) where interested individuals can learn about the interview process and how to prepare.  ABC 57
