  • Make South Bend is expanding its community art space into the entire strip mall on Mishawaka Ave in the River Park area. Owners Nat and Michelle Fitzgerald plan to add event space, small studios and a barber shop with a soft opening on Aug. 19—China Wok and other tenants will remain open.  ABC 57

CRIME NEWS

  • A Grovertown man, 37-year-old Devin Akers, was arrested on Monday in Starke County after police responded to a domestic call around 5 p.m. on the 5000 N block of State Road 23 — he allegedly struck a woman, threatened her with a gun, and police found additional firearms and suspected drug paraphernalia.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend Police Department will host a women’s open house on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to recruit more female officers who can offer different perspectives during sensitive calls—details for the summer prospect day on August 23 will be provided later.  WSBT
  • The City of South Bend partnered with the Housing Authority of South Bend to host a community input meeting for Phase 1 of the Western Avenue Transformation District today at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph County Public Library Community Learning Center on 305 S. Michigan St—city officials plan to collect feedback on redeveloping the former Rabbi Shulman and Monroe Circle block into a mixed-income neighborhood.  ABC 57

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Alicia Wilson at South Bend Clinic said she has seen cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease almost every day in recent weeks, a virus that causes rashes on the hands and feet, mouth sores and fever in children. The illness usually improves within two to seven days while local daycares stress proper hand washing — essential to stop the spread.  ABC 57

  • U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 850 Indiana cities for best places to live for 2025‑26 by weighing education, healthcare, housing, crime, and other factors—Carmel and Fishers led the list while cities like South Bend also scored well, showing a range of quality in local communities.  South Bend Tribune
