COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The old ReStore building on South Main Street is being renovated into the Monarca Event Center by the Rosales family and a local construction firm—this 15,000-square-foot space will hold up to 450 guests and is set to open on September 15 after construction wraps on August 23.  WSBT
  • Granger Community Church is partnering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to host a bed-building event on August 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its Granger Campus—volunteers will build beds and collect new bedding and pillows—aiming to serve over 1,000 Michiana children on the waiting list.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week, South Bend and nearby towns host many events as the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival begins its 25th anniversary production of King Lear on Aug. 21 and a classic car cruise runs every Thursday while a free Aviation Education Day is held at the airport on Aug. 23—other festivals and shows offer live music and fun for families throughout the week.  South Bend Tribune
  • Between Aug. 18—24, many concerts will take place in the local area with shows held in parks and community venues in South Bend, Buchanan, and nearby towns. Most concerts are free or cost a small fee, and fans should bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the music.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of South Bend announced that NIPSCO will close New Road between Bremen Highway and Madison Trail beginning August 22— the road will reopen on September 12.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame football has not chosen its starting quarterback after 15 practice reps were split evenly between Kenny Minchey and CJ Carr during Sunday's scrimmage at Notre Dame Stadium. Coach Marcus Freeman said the decision is pending — he will decide before the team takes on Miami on Aug. 31.  South Bend Tribune
