CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Delvaughn Moore, accused of killing Joyce Montague at Miami Hills Apartments in October last year, was arrested in Illinois on unrelated felony charges—he was transferred Monday to St. Joseph County Jail to face murder charges with his hearing set for next month. WSBT
- ➤ A meeting was held tonight by Councilwoman Ophelia Gooden-Rodgers and South Bend police with local residents to address rising retail theft after the Kroger on Western Avenue closed—residents now worry about safety and call for more patrols and a new grocery store. WSBT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Saint Mary's College is preparing to welcome roughly 500 new first-year and transfer students with move-in on Thursday and classes starting next Monday — the incoming class is the largest in decades and raises the campus total to about 1,500 students. ABC 57
- ➤ South Bend Schools start the new 2025-26 school year today with revised start times—elementary students attend from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while middle, high, and K-8 students attend from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. WSBT
- ➤ Thirteen thousand students are returning today to South Bend Community Schools as Superintendent Eid leads his first full day in charge—he has worked in nearly every role in the district. Eid said the year will focus on boosting graduation rates, improving ILEARN and IREAD scores and ensuring bus information is updated for safe travel. ABC 57
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The EPA reported that PFAS are in Indiana drinking water with two cities exceeding the federal limit—South Bend measured at 1.3 times and Morgantown at 1.6 times the allowed level. Water systems must work to reduce these chemicals to meet federal standards. South Bend Tribune
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A national survey of more than 3,000 voters ranked South Bend’s St. Joseph County-City Building—built in 1967—63rd among the 100 ugliest public buildings in the United States. County officials are reviewing options for the building amid costly repairs while Evansville’s Civic Center Complex ranked 76th on the list. South Bend Tribune
