CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The St. Joseph County Police Department arrested 37-year-old Carolyn Estey — wanted on felony and probation-related charges — after an investigation on Wednesday led officers to a Day Road residence where she was found hiding in a clothes dryer. ABC 57
- ➤ On August 21st a South Bend resident filed a police complaint against Officer Samuel Chaput after viewing body camera footage showing him restraining a teenage girl with what she considered excessive force — several board members now call for policy changes to allow them access to video evidence, arguing that it would clear any doubts over the review process. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Notre Dame’s Institute for Educational Initiatives launched a free web-based app called Number Sense to help students in grades three through twelve improve mental math without paper or pencil—users can compare their scores with peers nationwide as the app, in development for six years, is already used in local schools and 35 other states. - ➤ On August 21, the Notre Dame campus hosted the band’s first march-out for the Fighting Irish—an event that kicked off a four-day bootcamp with over 300 members learning classic anthems and starting a new academic year. WSBT
- ➤ Aviation Education Day returns at South Bend International Airport on Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Studebaker Hanger—providing airfield tours, ARFF demonstrations, and aircraft displays including a FedEx Boeing 757. The free event will let attendees board a SkyWest Airlines aircraft and give scouts a chance to earn an aviation merit badge while offering young flyers introductory flights for children ages 8 to 17 on a first-come basis. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Armadillo sightings have increased in Indiana since the early 2000s as Indiana DNR confirmed more reports in recent years. The nine-banded armadillo may carry diseases such as leprosy and it is illegal to trap or kill them unless they cause property damage—residents should report any encounters. South Bend Tribune

- ➤ Former Notre Dame football star Aaron Taylor started a new YouTube podcast called Trench Life to share simple tips about the offensive line; the first episode aired this week and new shows will come on Thursdays. - ➤ Today, as the Notre Dame Football season begins, the athletic department unveiled the first sports-specific leprechaun mark — a design created by Fighting Irish Media with input from athletic programs.
